Taken by the Princess of Wales in Windsor, it shows the now 9 year old Princess Charlotte, in the garden, learning on a flowery gate wearing a denim skirt, pink cardigan, and a dark blue top.

Like her younger brother, Prince Louis, who celebrated his 6th Birthday last week, birthday portrait, it was released on the day of her birthday. It was not released to the press under embargo a day early, likely to allow the palace to post in their own time. It was posted at around 10am, on the morning of Princess Charlotte's 9th Birthday.

Royal fans were quick to spot that Princess Charlotte was wearing the same cardigan as she was wearing in the mother's day photo. The palace usually marks the Wales children's birthdays with a new portrait, usually taken by the Princess of Wales or a professional photographer. Last year in 2023, a picture of Princess Charlotte lying on a white chair, taken by her mother, and her with another with her dog Orla taken by Millie Pilkington was released to mark her 8th Birthday.

In 2022, Princess Charlotte's 7th Birthday was marked via a spring like bluebell Shoot, where the Princess was pictured by her mother in a field of Bluebells. A few pictures were released including one of Princess Charlotte and her dog, Orla. For Princess Charlotte's 6th Birthday, back in 2021, a grown up shot of the little Princess wearing a floral dress was shared by the palace. 

Over the Coronavirus Pandemic back in 2020, a few shots were shared by Kensington Palace to mark Princess Charlotte's 5th Birthday. These showed Princess Charlotte helping with shopping in the Norfolk Area.

For Princess Charlotte's 4th Birthday back in 2019, Kensington Palace shared an adorable snap of Princess Charlotte enjoying the outdoors. It's been reported that the Wales Children love exploring outdoors and that their parents encourage them to go into the garden after school and homework. They are said to spend very little time on the Electronics.

Princess Charlotte's 3rd birthday back in 2018, was marked via two snaps, one of her off to Willcocks Nursery School and another snap with her and baby brother Louis. Her second birthday in 2017, was marked with a beautiful candid shot of the little Princess spending time outdoors reading a book. For her first Birthday back in 2016, Kensington Palace shared a number of shots of the baby Princess Charlotte playing around in their Norfolk Home.

This new portrait is part of a tradition, where senior royal family members share a new picture or portrait of the royal celebrating their birthday. In this case it's Princess Charlotte, who is very high up in the line of succession and will likely become a senior royal after formal schooling. Kensington Palace have carried this sweet tradition of Sharing a new snap on their birthday's with the Prince and Princess of Wales' children since they were babies.

This birthday photo will likely appear on cards being sent out to royal fans who mailed in a letter for Princess Charlotte's 9th Birthday. We all hope Charlotte Princess has a wonderful Birthday today! Happy Birthday Princess Charlotte.
