A notable event occurred last year when Prince George successfully convinced his grandfather, King Charles, to change a centuries-old tradition that preceded the coronation. When it was announced that Prince George would serve as a Pallbearer of Honor at King Charles' coronation in May 2023, both Katherine and Prince William were extremely proud. At just 9 years old, George took on a role usually reserved for older sons of nobles or senior members of the royal family, which included walking behind the king and helping him put on his robes on such an important day.
The traditional uniform for a footman of honor consisted of white knee-high tights and breeches, an outfit that George was uncomfortable with due to concerns about teasing from his classmates at Lambrook School, where he attended with his siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Showing considerable maturity, George approached King Charles with a sincere request to modify the traditional uniform, expressing a preference for trousers rather than breeches and breeches. Understanding the importance of his nephew's comfort and confidence, King Charles happily agreed to the exception.
As a result, George and his Pages friends Nicholas Barkley, Lord Oliver Chumley and Ralph Tush wore long scarlet robes trimmed with gold trim, white satin waistcoats, black trousers, white gloves, black buckled shoes, lace cuffs and ruffles. Watching her eldest son take this important step towards adulthood was an emotional moment for Catherine. It highlighted George’s growing understanding of his responsibilities and his ability to influence and adapt to the traditions that shaped their lives.
Catherine had always aimed to create a nurturing environment for her children, ensuring that they enjoyed as normal a childhood as possible despite their royal status. George’s request and subsequent changes exemplified the loving and open family dynamic that Catherine and William had cultivated. As second in line to the throne after his father, Prince William, George’s participation in the coronation marked a significant milestone in his royal journey.
His participation and the changes he inspired served as early indicators of his future role and the influence he would have as an adult. One significant challenge George will soon face is royal protocol, which limits which royals can travel together to maintain the royal bloodline in the event of a problem. When he turns 12 in July 2025, George will no longer be allowed to fly with his father and sister, highlighting the special responsibilities and precautions that come with being in the line of succession.
